Aerial laser scanning of the territory, forests and road network of Finland

In 2008 and 2009, aerial laser scanning works under several projects were completed by METRUM Ltd. via using the specialized corporate aircraft. For purposes of the Finnish State Land Service, aerial laser scanning of the entire territory of the country was provided while the works were carried out in cooperation with three other companies.METRUM completed works over the area of nearly 10,000 square kilometres. The obtained data were used in production of cartographic materials for purposes of spatial planning, etc.For forest inventory purposes, METRUM completed aerial laserscanning of an area of 3,500 square kilometres to obtain data on height of the trees, shape of leafage as well as to fix other specific characters. For road network reconstruction purposes, METRUM completed aerial laserscanning of a track of nearly 100 kilometres long. Usually this type of works in Finland are carried out from a helicopter but given the specifics of METRUM aircraft and the equipment, the required data density and accuracy could be provided also by the aircraft thus it is remarkably faster and cheaper.
